The Little Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade Committee has added a woman to its list of honorees who will serve as this year’s grand marshals.
Lucy Salpeter, a Rockaway native, joined the Navy WAVES in 1945 after graduating from New York University as an occupational therapist.
She served for two years at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland before returning to St. Albans to care for wounded war veterans after World War II.
Salpeter joins four other honorees — John W. Peterkin, Thomas Dent, Rocco Moretto and John McHugh Sr. — who will lead the parade route.
The 87th annual parade will start at 2 p.m. May 26.
