An elevator construction worker was killed Thursday morning after falling down an elevator shaft from the fifth floor of a school that is under construction in Sunnyside, the NYPD said. Police received a 911 call at 8:15 a.m. and responded to the PS 313 work site, at 45-45 42nd St. where the worker, who was in his 40s, was removed from the basement, authorities said.
It was not clear what caused the worker to fall, police say.
The worker, who has not been identified pending family notification, died in transit to Elmhurst Hospital Center.
A second elevator construction worker on the fourth floor was injured by falling debris and was also taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
The $57 million elementary school is scheduled to open in September.
