Say Woodside Man Attacked 90-Year-Old
Following an extensive investigation, detectives tracked down a Woodside man last week who allegedly mugged a 90- year-old man last month inside a neighborhood supermarket parking lot, it was reported.
Police identified the perpetrator as 28-year-old Wade Hairston of Broadway, who was booked last Tuesday, July 29, by the 114th Precinct Detective Squad.
Law enforcement sources said Hairston confronted the victim at around 10:45 a.m. on July 18 inside the Stop and Shop supermarket parking lot at 34-51 48th St.
According to information provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car when Hairston allegedly entered on the passenger’s side.
Reportedly, the suspect demanded the victim hand over his wallet and ATM card and provide the personal identification number (PIN). Police said Hairston allegedly rifled through the victim’s pockets and the vehicle’s glove compartment for property.
Seconds later, authorities stated, Hairston allegedly grabbed the elderly man by the throat, pointed a knife at him and threatened to cut his face if he screamed.
Police said the victim handed over his wallet, which contained $66 in cash and an ATM card, and provided the card’s PIN. Hairston reportedly ordered the man to drive him to a nearby ATM.
After the victim complied, it was reported, Hairston used the victim’s debit card to withdraw $700 cash from his bank account. Law enforcement sources said he allegedly returned to the vehicle and ordered the man to drive him to an undisclosed location.
Upon arrival, authorities noted, Hairston exited the car and fled in an unknown direction.
The theft was reported to the 114th Precinct; the victim suffered minor injuries.
Hairston was charged last Tuesday with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, unlawful imprisonment and petit larceny, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office.
The suspect was ordered held on $150,000 bond or $75,000 cash during arraignment before Queens Criminal Court Judge Michele Armstrong last Wednesday, July 30, according to court records.
