Police arrest Whitestone shooting suspect: NYPD

WHITESTONE — Police arrested the grandson of a former Gambino family associate who they said shot a childhood friend on the Whitestone shore Aug. 29, the Queens DA’s office said.

Robert Sasso, 33, of Flushing, allegedly shot Dean Oku, 39, four times near the intersection of Malba Drive and Summit Place when the two were smoking marijuana, according to the DA.

The victim called 911 himself and was rushed to New York Hospital Queens in critical condition, police said.

The tattooed suspect’s grandfather, Robert Sasso, was the head of a powerful construction union before he resigned because of alleged mafia ties and was convicted of racketeering, according to the New York Post.

In addition to being charged with attempted murder and the criminal possession of a weapon, Sasso is facing an assault charge for punching his girlfriend in the face, the DA’s office said.
