Luke Adams Helped Promote Area
Artist and long-time Sunnyside resident Luke Adams, a leader in the community for many years, died of a heart attack at the age of 76 on Monday, Nov. 10, according to published reports.
Adams was laid to rest at Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens following a funeral Mass at St. Raphael’s Roman Catholic Church in Long Island City last Friday, Nov. 14.
A Wake for Adams was held at Lynch Funeral Home in Sunnyside last Thursday, Nov. 13.
“It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that our distinguished Sunnyside Community Leader Luke Adams has passed away,” Community Board 2 staff wrote in a statement. “Luke was involved with so many things, the Sunnyside Chamber, Woodside Herald just to name a few. Luke Adams will be missed.”
He was active in both the Kiwanis Club and Lions Club; was a former president of the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce; and was an active Sunnyside resident for over 40 years.
Adams operated a travel agency in Sunnyside for several years.
Sunnyside Artists Inc., a group he was involved with, in lieu of flowers, is asking for donations to an online fundraising campaign that will fund The Luke Adams Art Prize, to be awarded annually to local artists. Reportedly, the fundraising target is $5,000.
