The European winter holiday of St. Nicholas Day was celebrated in Ridgewood on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Onderdonk House. Sponsored by the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society (GRHS), the festivities included holiday music performances, refreshments, guided tours of the house and a visit with St. Nicholas, the inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus. Traditionally celebrated on Dec. 6, St. Nicholas Day serves as the Christian feast of St. Nicholas of Myra, a fourth century bishop known to have left gifts for children while traveling across Europe. Pictured at the celebration are GRHS President Linda Monte; St. Nicholas, whose visit was made possible by Rein Oluet; and GRHS members Steve Monte, Caitlin McDonald, Molly Gratton, Virginia Comber and MaryEllen Borello.
