Queens Borough President Melinda Katz is looking to appoint two members to each of the borough’s seven Community Education Councils, to serve from July 2015 through June 2017.
Each 12-member CEC coordinates parent involvement and plays an essential role in shaping superlocal education policies for city public schools. As education policy advisory bodies, CECs review and evaluate their district’s programming, approve zoning lines and host public hearings.
Members serve CECs on a volunteer basis and must live in, own or operate a business in the community school district in which they are appointed.
“As a mom of two boys, I can attest firsthand to the impact that parental and community involvement has on our education system,” Katz said in a statement.
“Queens parents are certainly some of the most active, vocal and effective in the city, and the difference is clear. The nexus of collaboration between families, educators and surrounding community is the key to success of our schools, and we urge folks to apply.”
Katz is looking for applications from either qualified individuals with experience in education or any education-minded individuals. Applications must be submitted to the borough office via mail, email or in person by Thursday, April 30. Forms are available online at www.queen
