Arson blamed in fire at Woodhaven church’s community center

By Eric Jankiewicz

A fire briefly lit a church’s community center in Woodhaven on Monday morning, according to police.

The community center is part of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Parish Center on the corner of 86th Street 101st Avenue. According to police, someone used gasoline to light the center’s floor on fire Monday morning, but the flames were put out before the Fire Department even showed up. Police were looking for someone who might have started the fire, but no suspects have been found, police said. Nobody was injured in the brief blaze.

The church was originally erected in 1884, but the original structure was burned down in the early 1900s, according to the church’s history. The building that now stands there was built in 1917.
