It’s a welcome step back in time.
St. Anastasia Church in Douglaston will feature past clergy this Sunday in a special Mass to honor the church’s upcoming centennial anniversary.
The Mass will take place at 45-14 245th St. on Sept. 13 at noon. The theme is “Centennial Celebration Honoring Past Parish Clergy.”
Some of the guest clergy confirmed to attend served St. Anastasia Church church up to 30 years ago. They will appear alongside the church’s current pastor, Msgr. Anthony F. Sherman, and his associate, Rev. Dariusz Strzelecki.
Msgr. George J. Ryan, Msgr. Michael J. Cantley, Rev. Edward Kachurka, Rev. William McLaughlin, Rev. Chris Piasta, Rev. Matteo Rizzo and Rev. Anthony Rucando have confirmed their attendance.
Susan Cerezo, a volunteer who is helping to organize events leading up to the church’s upcoming centennial celebration, said that the congregation will be happy to see pastors who have been part of their lives.
“Some of the parishioners are older people in their 80s who were baptized there, married there, had first communion there and they still live there,” Cerezo said. “So it will be good for them.”
The Mass is the last event in a year of programming leading up to a two-day celebration on the Oct. 18 centennial anniversary of St. Anastasia Church.
On Oct. 17, a cocktail hour will be followed by dinner and dancing. Interested parties can contact the church rectory at 718-631-4454 for reservations, and the cost is $75 per couple or $40 per person. Payment checks should be submitted by Sept. 15.
A Centennial Closing Mass will be celebrated by the Bishop of Brooklyn, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, at noon on Oct. 18. Following the mass, a themed festival will feature antique cars, volunteers dressed in the fashion of clothes circa the 1900s, food, face painting, cotton candy machine, hot dog cart, jugglers, clowns, popcorn-making machines and balloon sculptures.
