Thieves after tires and rims in Bayside

By Gabriel Rom

Tires and rims are tempting thieves throughout Queens and especially in Bayside.

The 111th Precinct announced last week that rims and tires from Honda, Nissan and Toyota model cars are at risk of being stolen. A similar theft pattern has occurred in Ridgewood.

Police released a number of tips to help owners protect their cars: activate car alarms, purchase lug nut locks and install video cameras near the owner’s place of residence.

Police said many of these crimes have occurred so pedestrians should be especially cognizant of any suspicious activity on their blocks in the evening.

Capt. Gregory Mackie of the 104th Precinct also highlighted a car-stripping scheme at a recent 104th Precinct Community Council meeting. He said that criminals had stripped numerous cars in the Ridgewood area. One particular tire and rim theft totaled approximately $8,000.

“The perpetrators are creatures of habit and they take the path of least resistance,” Mackie implored. “Lock your doors.”
