Retired corrections cop from Woodside booked for attempting to kill his wife

A retired corrections officer finds himself sitting in a jail cell on Tuesday morning on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting his wife in their Woodside home on Sunday evening.

Prosecutors said Victor Guzman, 54, got into a dispute his 52-year-old wife over their impending divorce inside their apartment, which the New York Daily News reported is on 59th Street near Laurel Hill Boulevard, at about 7:45 p.m. on March 12. The couple’s 7-year-old grandson was home at the time, according to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown.

The argument turned violent, law enforcement sources said, when Guzman pulled out a .38-caliber firearm and shot his wife in the chest. Bullet fragments struck her spleen, stomach and adrenal glands, authorities said. Guzman then walked out of the home.

Officers from the 108th Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene. The victim was brought to Elmhurst Hospital for treatment of her injuries; she is expected to make a recovery.

According to published reports, Guzman was located soon after the shooting walking along 60th Street; he was taken into custody by police and charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

During his arraignment hearing, according to court records, Guzman was ordered held without bail and must return to court on March 27. If convicted of the charges, he could face up to 25 years behind bars, Brown said.
