The Whitestone community is coming together in support of a young Whitestone girl with leukemia at an annual basketball league game.
First-grader Chloe Mitchell was diagnosed with leukemia March 2 after falling ill during spring break vacation.
Her mother Erin started a GoFund me page that has received support from all over the community and in the last two weeks the page has raised $38,324 of its $40,000 goal.
“To say this diagnosis is devastating to all who love Chloe is an understatement,” the page said. “Chloe’s mom, Erin, is a single parent and has been by Chloe’s side since the devastating news. While her doctors are hopeful that they will eventually be able to cure her, it is going to be a long road. Already this spunky little 6-year-old has been subjected to a bone marrow biopsy and is scheduled to have her port placed and start chemo immediately.”
Dwarf-Giraffe Athletic League, a local basketball league where Chloe played instructional basketball, has already raised $3,400.
The league will hold a fund-raiser at its annual Basketball All Star Day this Saturday.
Jose Garcia, a member of the league, said that Dwarf-Giraffe would also match the total score of the eight different games in monetary amount.
Garcia said the league has done similar fund-raisers for other families in need.
“We don’t want people to forget about her,” he said. “She needs our help.”
Last week Chloe’s mother provided an update on her condition.
“Hello everyone, just an update,” she wrote. “Chloe came home Thursday evening from the hospital. She is thrilled to be home and has been smiling ear to ear at all the wonderful baskets and gifts she has received. She is doing well, Monday is a full day at NYU. I am so touched by everyone’s support and love during this difficult time. Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!!”
The All Star game will be held at 149-50 15th Road.at 10 a.m.
