One Astoria business is trying to make it a little easier for book lovers to choose what to read each month.
Astoria Bookshop, located at 31-29 31st St., will launch its monthly book subscription boxes later this month. Readers will be able to choose from a variety of genres for children and adults that will be shipped to their house every month.
Co-owner Lexi Beach said an employee convinced her that people in the neighborhood would be interested in the initiative, which launches on Sept. 21.
“I think that lines up really well with our goals as a small bookstore,” she said. “We curate our selection really carefully [and] this way you get something that you know has the booksellers’ seal of approval delivered right to you.”
Adults can choose from general fiction, suspense/thriller and nonfiction boxes, and children can choose from picture book, middle grade and young adult options.
The children’s boxes will also come with one hardcover book released within the last 30 days of the ship date, stickers, tattoos and a bookmark while the adults will receive two books, one of which is an advanced uncorrected copy, and a bookmark.
The subscription runs from month to month, and there are also three-month subscriptions. An adult box costs $35 for a month subscription and $100 for the three-month option. A children’s box costs $25 for a month subscription and $70 for a three-month subscription.
Each box will com wrapped in signature Astoria Bookshop gold paper, bound with green ribbon with hand-stamped logo tags. Beach said all staff members have slightly different tastes in books, which helped to create well-rounded lists.
