Close Encounters of the Third Kind — This operatic tale of a group of humans preparing to make contact with mysterious outer-space visitors is an emotionally stirring, visually jaw-dropping journey.

I Am Big Bird — For 45 years, Caroll Spinney has been beloved by generations of children as the man behind Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. A thoughtful portrait of the man in the yellow suit, I Am Big Bird features extraordinary footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson as it traces his journey from bullied child to childhood icon.

Close Relations (Rodnye) — Close Relations is at once an intimate family portrait and a graceful journalistic endeavor, a movie of the intense present that illuminates a place caught between a troubled past and an anxious future.

Events

Wheelchair Football Clinic — The NYC Parks Wheelchair Football Clinic welcomes girls and boys to take part in instructional drills, strategy, and game play. All equipment is provided. Teams consist of six players and must include one female and one quadriplegic participant. The field is 60 yards by 22 yards with eight yards at each end zone. First down marker lines are drawn every 15 yards. Games are played in two 20 minute halves with 10 minutes for halftime. Scoring a touchdown is six points.

Bonkerz the Clown — This wise-cracking Brooklyn clown is proud to cross the borough border and bring his show to Queens. He’ll make jokes, clown around, and do some magic. Always looking for volunteers to help him with tricks, Bonkerz is sure to give all guests stomach aches from laughing so hard.

Andrew Harvey Memorial 5K Run — Participate in this 5K run in Queens.

Kickoff to Fall — Come celebrate the autumn season at the Queens County Farm Museum. Explore the grounds and buy a variety of Hudson Valley apples, donuts, fresh cider, and locally-made pie. Listen to live country western music by Savannah Sky and check out the Amazing Maize Maze and Pumpkin Patch. Early arrival is recommended.

The Amazing Michaels Juggling Show — Michael Karas presents a world-class juggling show full of jaw-dropping stunts, exciting audience participation, and hilarious physical comedy. From balls, clubs and rings to puppets, knives and spinning plates, Michael will dazzle you with his incredible array of circus talents. Who knows? He may even inspire you to start juggling yourself.

Rebolu — With some of the finest Colombian musicians in the United States, Ronald Polo (vocalist/composer/gaitero) and Morris Cañate (master folkloric percussionist) join their talents to lead and ensemble rich of musical traditions of their ancestors.

Interminable — Interminable is a Philadelphia-based dyasporic space jazz project, born out of a chance encounter on the train. Performers include Marty Gottlieb-Hollis (trumpet), Becca Graham (trumpet), Ximena Violante (jarana, vocals), John Cole (drums), TBC (bass)

New York Classical Players — The New York Classical Olayers collaborate with world-renowned pianist HaeSun Paik, top prize winner at Queen Elisabeth, Leeds, William Kapell and Tchiakovsky competitions, performing as soloist in Beethoven’s lyrical piano concerto No. 4. The program opens with rising star composer Eric Nathan’s “Omaggio a Gesulado” as the premier performance in string orchestra version. NYCP also performs Shostakovich’s Scherzo and Allegro as well as Saint-Saens’ well-loved virtuoso violin work featuring musical polymath Ken Hamao.

Monthly Jazz Jam — Held on the first Wednesday of every month. Jazz Jams are a fun way to hone your skills and jam with your peers. The house band is led by saxophonist Carol Sudhalter. All are welcome regardless of instrument. Don’t play? Come listen.
