Queens residents are invited to enjoy an afternoon of art and conversation in Flushing this weekend.
Students in Queens College’s Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) program will host a free Fall 2017 Open Studios event on Oct. 14. A total of 11 artists will have their work on display at the event and be in attendance.
According to organizer and participant Cody Herrmann, visitors will have the opportunity to view artists’ most recent works, as well as works in progress. The art will cover a variety of mediums, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, performance, social practice, ceramics and drawing.
“It really is a unique event,” Herrmann said. “We’re excited to be reaching out to people off-campus.”
Artists with work on display include Eliesha Grant, Cody Herrmann, Tara Homasi, Zaid Islam, Cecilia Judge, Naomi Kuo, Ed Majkowski, Melissa Misla, Ashley Morgan, Julian Phillips and Kathryn Sullivan.
According to Herrmann, some of the artists are new to Queens, exploring the borough for the first time, while some are longtime residents. Born and raised in Flushing herself, much of Herrmann’s work is influenced by the eastern Queens neighborhood. The artist’s “Plane View” project explores the environmental impacts of air traffic, while other works speak to conditions at Flushing Bay and Creek.
The free event will take place on the sixth floor of Klapper Hall at CUNY Queens College, located at 65-30 Kissena Blvd. Attendees can stop by anytime between noon and 6 p.m.
Under the guidance of faculty Chloë Bass, Glenn Goldberg, Tony Gonzalez, Sin-ying Ho, Kurt Kauper, Tyrone Mitchell, Debra Priestly and Gregory Sholette, the department has also organized an upcoming exhibit titled, “An Exquisite Cadaver.” It will be on view from Oct. 25 to Nov. 3, in the Student Gallery on the fourth floor of Klapper Hall.
