Queens’ newest Assemblywoman has just received the backing of two prominent political leaders.
Assemblywoman Ari Espinal was endorsed by both City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz in the same week. Katz announced her support for Espinal on June 11, and two days later, Johnson announced his endorsement of the incumbent.
On April 24, Espinal ran unopposed in a special election to fill Assembly District 39, which includes parts of Jackson Heights, Elmhurst and Corona, formerly held by City Councilman Francisco Moya. Espinal is running against civic activist Catalina Cruz in the Sept. 13 Democratic primary.
“Assemblywoman Ari Espinal is the right leader for Central Queens in the Assembly. She has the experience and passion to continue to deliver for her community and produce real results. I am proud to endorse her for re-election and look forward to partnering with her on the issues that matter most to Queens’ families,” said Johnson on June 13.
Espinal expressed her gratitude for Johnson’s endorsement and spoke highly of his support for progressive values and equality.
“I am so excited to have the support of Speaker Corey Johnson. He is a strong advocate for all who call New York City home, and he is a powerful voice for progressive values and equality for all. I am eager to continue working with him and ready to keep delivering for my community in the Assembly,” said Espinal.
Days before Johnson’s endorsement, the Queens borough president voiced her support for Espinal. In her endorsement, Katz said that the Assemblywoman is the candidate she believes will bring forth “real change” to the community.
“Espinal is the leader Central Queens needs in Albany. She has the experience and commitment to make real change and fight for our community. From fighting for abuse victims, to advocating for our immigrants, Assemblywoman Espinal is the voice we need in the Assembly,” said Katz.
Espinal thanked Katz and mentioned that the borough president has fought for issues involving students, seniors and immigrants, who are a group that Espinal herself has advocated for during her time working on Councilman Francisco Moya’s staff for seven years.
“I am honored to have the endorsement of Borough President Katz. Throughout her time in office, she has fought for our students, seniors, immigrants, and families. I am eager to continue working with Borough President Katz to keep addressing issues that matter most to Queens families,” said Espinal.
