On June 21, community gardens in Astoria and Jamaica will host free evening concerts in honor of Greenthumb’s 4oth anniversary.

The Two Coves Community Garden in Astoria, located at Astoria Boulevard and Main Avenue, will host two performers at their free event. At 4 p.m. concertgoers will be treated to a fingerstyle guitar performance by Matthew Nichols, and at 5:15 p.m. Colleen Deery and Friends will grace the audience with traditional Irish music.

At Discovery Community Garden, located at 108-56 Union Hall St., attendees will be able to enjoy the punk and funk protest songs of Rafael Landron at 5 p.m. and the funky brass jam band stylings of Drumadics Beat-N-Brass Band at 6 p.m.

These concerts in Queens and in 14 other gardens across the city, are part of Make Music New York, a live, free musical celebration with over 1,000 concerts in public spaces across the city this Thursday.

Greenthumb was established by the city in 1978 as a response to the increase in community gardening. Today, the organization has 550 gardens across the city, making it the largest community gardening program in the country. The city’s gardens span over 100 acres, with 20,000 community gardeners producing over 87,000 pounds of food per year.

All concerts in the community gardens will take place on Thursday, June 21. For more information and a full list of the gardens participating, click here.
