Hispanic Heritage Month doesn’t begin until Sept. 15, but a multicultural organization will be celebrating early.
On Sunday, JuntaHispana will celebrate, honor and recognize its Hispanic heritage by hosting a cultural extravaganza near the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the festival, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event will include exhibits, live music and dance performances to reflect cultures that have had such a big influence on present-day American life. Plazas and cultural villages will also be curated to represent the Spanish-speaking countries participating in the event.
In addition, the extravaganza will include artisans demonstrating, promoting and selling their handmade crafts as well as a multi-cultural food court with authentic Hispanic dishes.
The event will also feature a traveling market put on by grocery store companies C-Town and Bravo that will encourage attendees to sample different products while learning more about nutrition.
“Of all the varied cultures and traditions that are woven into the fabric of American life, Hispanic-Americans have some of the most distinctive, vigorous and sustained culture and traditions,” said Gabriella Vaque, JuntaHispana’s cultural director.
“JuntaHispana offers something for everyone — regardless of age or country of origin,” said Arelis Rodriguez, JuntaHispana’s director of entertainment. “I work hard, and will continue to work hard, to ensure that this organization continues to be based on family, culture and pride.”
Admittance and parking are free to the public for the event. Parking is limited and public transportation is recommended.
