Flushing Town Hall’s “Flushing Bound” event last week included an art reception in the venue’s gallery, music performed by jazz group “Since When?” and a Queensboro Dance Festival event in the theatre.
Curated by artists Nancy Gesimondo and Carol Crawford, “Flushing Bound” is designed to introduce LIC-A and its artists to the Flushing community, as well as encourage conversations between artists and the viewing public to help increase the understanding of the artistic creative process.
The diverse artwork on display at the “Flushing Bound” exhibit consisted of both figurative and abstract paintings, works on paper, photography, and mixed media pieces.
“The opportunity was given to us as a final extension of a show I put together called Making Connections,” Crawford said. “Our idea is to reach out and present to the various communities the tremendous varieties of artists and artwork. Queens is the richest borough of diversity in the nation and this show is a little bit of that.”
One of the more colorful pieces of art on display has no trouble capturing eyes. “Koi,” by Elsie Apacible, is located beneath the words, “Flushing Bound, A LIC-A Members Exhibition,” and uses its prime location to draw viewers into the exhibition.
Meanwhile, Junko Yamada’s collages are composed of thousands of pieces of fine rice paper in the “Harie” tradition, a style of art that dates back several centuries to the Nara period (AD 710-794).
Other artists whose work is on display include Elsie Acapible, Chuck Baker, Violet Baxter, Patricia Bouley, Nancy Bruno, Edwin Cadiz, Lou Corredor, Zoran Crnkovic, Jessica Doh, Eric Friedmann, Kaiser Kamal, Rebecca Kanfer, Christine Karapetian, Nicki Koning, June Kosloff, Ping Ping Lin, Robert Lobe, Nancy Macina, Lisa Maria Maya, Bruce Minson, Steve Palermo, Elinore Schnurr, Maria Spector, Siu Wong-Camac, Andrew Wheatley, Junko Yamada and Fulvia Zambon.
The gallery, which opened Sept. 7, will run through Sept. 29 at Flushing Town Hall — located at 137-35 Northern Blvd. — and is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those who wish to head to the gallery during the week can make an appointment by calling call Flushing Town Hall at (718) 463-7700 and asking for the box office.
