A 70-year-old man died early on Sunday morning after being struck by a SUV while attempting to cross Northern Boulevard in Corona, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said the incident occurred just before 5:20 a.m. on Sept. 9 at the corner of Northern Boulevard and 108th Street.
According to police, the unidentified man was walking within the designated crosswalk when he was hit by a Toyota Highlander traveling eastbound on the boulevard. The driver, a 40-year-old woman, stopped the vehicle and remained at the scene.
Officers from the 115th Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene; he had suffered severe trauma to his head and body. Police did not disclose his identity, pending family notification.
No charges have been filed against the driver at this time. The NYPD Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Squad is continuing to look into the case.
Northern Boulevard has seen plenty of deadly vehicular incidents involving pedestrians in recent months. In April, for example, a 9-year-old boy was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver on the boulevard near the Woodside/Jackson Heights border, prompting renewed calls for safety improvements along the roadway.
