Glendale will soon have its own designated zip code after U.S. Rep. Grace Meng’s (D-Flushing) measure was passed in the House.
Meng’s measure passed Sept. 26 as part of a bipartisan bill (H.R. 6846) that requires the Postal Service to create new zip codes for several communities across the county.
Under the legislation, the Postal Service must designate a single, unique zip code for the area that encompasses Glendale no later than 270 days from the date of the legislation’s enactment.
According to Meng, Glendale residents have long advocated for their own zip code after sharing its 11385 zip code with the adjacent community of Ridgewood, which has resulted in mail and service related problems.
“Establishing a zip code for Glendale would allow for more efficient mail delivery and ensure that first responders and navigation devices no longer have problems with finding correct addresses,” said Meng. “It would also ensure that the wonderful and vibrant identity of Glendale is appropriately recognized by the Postal Service.”
Meng joined the fight to provide Glendale with its own zip code in 2014, shortly after she was first sworn into the House of Representatives. She secured the passage of the legislation during the last session of Congress in 2016. But the Senate failed to act.
The bill, which passed by voice vote, will now head to the Senate.
