As the weather begins to cool, check out what Queens has to offer this weekend! 

GET TESTED AND VACCINATED

Before doing anything in person, get tested for COVID-19 and get vaccinated and boosted! Also, don’t forget to wear your mask indoors and socially distance wherever possible.

To slow the spread of COVID-19, the New York City Department of Health suggests getting tested often. Here is where you can find several places in Queens to get tested this weekend:

The United States Postal Service is also offering four free at-home test kits per address. Visit special.usps.com/testkits to learn how to order your test kits.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 12

Hip to Hip Theatre Presents “Much Ado About Nothing” (Voelker Orth Museum, 149-19 38th Ave., Flushing) 

Enjoy a free performance of this Shakespearean rom-com in the Voelker Orth Museum garden! The play runs for 90 minutes. Seating is provided and the garden is accessible. In the case of rain, the performance will be canceled. The show begins at 7:30 pm, seating opens at 7 p.m. http://www.vomuseum.org/exhibitions.html 

Summer Sports Experience (L/CPL Thomas P. Noonan Jr. Playground) 

Come for sports instruction and competition! Activities include sports, games, demonstrations, and more. 10:00 a.m.6:00 p.m. Free.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 

Pirate Pete’s Parrot (The Secret Theatre, 38-02 61st St Woodside)

Go on an adventure with this show that is fun for all ages! The show will play once a month, with the first date being Saturday, Aug. 13, from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $12.50 for kids. Purchase tickets here. https://secrettheatre.com/whats-on/ 

SUNDAY, AUGUST 14 

Green Soul Presents “Kelly Green and the Shades” (110-20 73rd Rd, Flushing) 

Enjoy some jazz with this concert series from Queens based duo, Green Soul. This Sunday, Green Soul Studios will be presenting “Kelly Green and the Shades,” featuring Dierk Peters (vibraphone) and Kenny Wollesen (drums). Light refreshments will be served (incl. house wine or BYOB). There is a $40 suggested donation ($20 student rate) via cash, Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle. Movies Under the Stars: Sing 2 (Play Area JHS 10 in Astoria Heights Playground)

Taiwan: A World of Orchids (43-50 Main Street, Flushing)

Immerse yourself in Taiwan: A World of Orchids exhibition! In this three-day weekend at Queens Botanical Garden, view a stunning display of over 750 pots of orchids and experience Taiwanese art and culture! Each day (8/12 – 8/14) will have different events. Check the schedule on the Queens Botanical Garden’s website to see what interests you. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday/Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., with a post exhibit orchid sale from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the garden: Members free, Adults $6, Seniors (age 62+) $4, Students with ID $4, Children (ages 4 to 12) $2, Children (age 3 and under) free. Rise Up NYC Concert Series (Roy Wilkins Park) 

Experience this exciting concert series! Saturday features a lineup of hip hop artists, including Ja Rule, The Lox, Rakim, and is curated by Funk Flex. Sunday’s lineup consists of R&B artists such as PJ Morton, Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem DeVaughn, Alison Hinds, Montell Jordan, 112, Dahved Levy, Screechy, and Red Fox. Saturday, Aug. 13: 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. Doors open at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14: 2 p.m. – 8.pm. Doors open at 1 p.m. Free.
