Three men were wounded during an early morning shooting Monday, June 19, at a grassy knoll at the base of the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge in Rockaway Beach.
Police from the 100th Precinct responded to a 911 call of shots fired at 12:47 a.m. at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 96th Street and discovered the injured men who had been at a late-night barbecue near the bridge when gunfire erupted, according to authorities.
EMS responded to the scene and rushed the victims to St. John Episcopal Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition. An NYPD spokeswoman said a 56-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his right arm, a 21-year-old man was shot in the buttocks and a 37-year-old man was treated for a gunshot wound to his torso.
Detectives searched the grassy knoll for spent rounds on Monday morning, while other investigators were searching a white Mercedes Benz that was surrounded by crime scene tape in front of Sorrentino’s Market and Butcher Shop at 99-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd., across from St. Camillus Church.
The NYPD spokesman was not able to provide any details on the suspected gunman, saying only that there are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
