This month, Flushing Town Hall is presenting its annual Visual Art Members’ Exhibition which will run throughout the summer and will host workshops and programs to provide services/resources for artists. The venue is also celebrating the return of its third annual Jazz Jam All-Stars concert.

Flushing Town Hall is excited to present its annual Visual Art Members’ Exhibition this summer. The show will run throughout July. FTH is inviting the public to view the salon-style exhibition. A portion of art proceeds will support FTH’s visual arts programs.

Jazz Jam All-Star Concert 2023

The third annual Jazz Jam All-Stars Concert returns! Ten outstanding musicians chosen from FTH’s monthly Jazz Jams will be performing alongside its house band. Join FTH for a concert celebrating its Jazz community, musicians, and music lovers, in the spirit of Louis Armstrong. Ticket sales help keep FTH’s monthly Jazz Jams free for musicians and members.

Flushing Town Hall’s Global Mashup concert series continues throughout the summer. This concert will feature a special collaboration between Grammy-nominated Moroccan gnawa master Samir LanGus, southern Balkan dance band Mountain Lions, and Balkan folk dance lessons from Kristina Vaskys.

Are you an arts administrator living or working in Queens? Join The New York Foundation for the Arts, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts’ (NYSCA) State & Local Partnerships program and Flushing Town Hall, for a social meet-up to develop connections and grow your professional network in the region. The event will serve as a forum for arts administrators to explore the strengths and challenges of the field. NYFA will also provide leadership resources from its Emerging Leaders and Incubator for Executive Leaders of Color programs. This programming is part of NYFA’s entrepreneurial training in New York State.

NYSCA/NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur Programs

The NYSCA/NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur Program is an intensive, multi-day in-person professional development opportunity that delves into the fundamental principles of sustainability in the arts. Content will be customized in light of current challenges artists everywhere are facing, while also targeting challenges for artists specifically located in Queens County, and will be presented with this perspective in mind.

Featured topics will include strategic planning, finance, law, marketing, and fundraising, with additional material drawn from NYFA’s popular textbook The Profitable Artist (Allworth Press, 2018). Selected artists will also receive work sample reviews from professionals in their discipline. The structure will consist of a blend of workshops, discussions, and breakout groups. Participants will work through flexible and dynamic tools that will help to provide a blueprint for their practice or specific projects.

The program benefits artists of all disciplines and stages of their career who are looking to identify new ways of thinking and approaching their arts practice, while seeking a community of like-minded peers.

There is no charge to participate in the NYSCA/NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur Program. Artists interested in attending are required to apply, and participants are selected through a panel review process. Artists of all disciplines (Visual, Multidisciplinary, Performing, Literary, Interdisciplinary, Social Practice, Folk and Traditional, Film, Video and New Media) and career stages, including students, are encouraged to apply.

Meet & Greet: Overview of Artist As Entrepreneur and Participant Introductions

Intensive, Friday – Saturday, July 21 to 23
Time: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Daily

Workshops and panels on strategic planning, marketing, finance, art law, and fundraising.
A work sample review based on each artist’s application submission to the program.
Individual presentations of action plans in small groups to close the program.

FTH / NYFA Artist Gathering: Learn About Artist Resources and Services

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), in partnership with New York State Council on the Arts’ (NYSCA) State & Local Partnerships program, will present a free public program for artists of all disciplines in collaboration with Flushing Town Hall. This programming is part of NYFA’s entrepreneurial training in Queens, focusing on artists living and working in Queens and New York City.

NYFA will present an overview of FTH’s free and low-cost national programs and services. Whether you’re trying to raise money to finish a particular project, seeking feedback on your work, looking for an artist residency, or trying to find a job, NYFA has resources that you can use to help you sustain and grow your practice. FTH will also provide information on the NYSCA/NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur program, which will be held throughout New York State in 2023. Additionally, Flushing Town Hall will share an overview of the grants and services it offers to local artists.

‘Rind and flesh skin and peel’ is a movement installation as a practice in familiarizing viewers with the human form with all of its uniqueness and complexities. Four forms will fill the room; living breathing bodies yet statuesque; bare-chested with heads buried in buckets. As they crawl, slink, sit, and delicately balance, crash, crush, squeeze, and squish mounds of vibrant, juicy citrus, the audience has permission to view their bodies. We can begin to wash away our binary assumptions and receive the human body as a communicator and a work of art. The experience is an opportunity to see the body as raw, primal, visceral, and vulnerable. We are vivacious beings as opposed to a gendered story. We can indulge in being seen instead of being shamed for developing.
