Samiya Haqiqi was last seen about 2:30 the afternoon of Friday, Nov 12 leaving Quinnipiac Law School in New Haven. She was believed to be meeting a friend for dinner in Queens, before heading home to visit her parents. The 26-year old, first-year law student never arrived.
When she failed to appear, her family and local police began a desperate search for the missing student. Three days later family members discovered Haqiqis 1997 black Volkswagen Jetta convertible abandoned in the parking lot of a Grand Union supermarket, at Northern Boulevard and Marathon Parkway in Little Neck. According to police officials, the car was locked and there was no sign of foul play. Left behind on the seat, a gold necklace that Haqiqi was fond of wearing.
Her father, Abdul Haqiqi, said this was completely out of character for her daughter to disappear without first notifying her family. He said that his daughter would regularly call at 11 p.m. and would often come home for weekend visits. The disappearance has left her loved ones puzzled and searching frantically for answers.
"As a first-year law student, you are so bogged down with work that I cant see anyone just walking away," said Bobby Burns, a second-year law student at Quinnipiac. Despite notices across campus asking students not to speak to the press, Burns broke the wall of silence to speak to the Courier. "I am surprised how its not a big story on campus," he said. "I have heard very little talk about it."
In Flushing the search for Haqiqi has intensified. Police bloodhounds have scoured Northeast Queens, the area her car was found in, but failed to pick up a trail. Detectives at the 109th precinct in Queens have utilized air, harbor, and foot patrols to locate Haqiqi, described by police as 55," 130 pounds with brownish black curly hair.
New York police have also questioned a man they described as Haqiqis boyfriend, as well as others, but as of yet, police have found no evidence to imply that a crime had been committed.
In Connecticut, Hamden Police Chief Robert Nolan said that local officers searched Haqiqis apartment, but once again all paths lead directly to a dead end.
"We are very concerned," said John Morgan, Director of Public Relations for Quinnipiac College. "We are looking forward to her return."
