This weekend marks the kickoff for Queens 2000, a yearlong series of programs reflecting on the 20th century African-American experience in Queens.
Each month Queens 2000 plans to organize events on a particular theme to inspire youth.
The opening event will honor Martin Luther King on his birthday at 2 p.m. Saturday at York College and will feature the United Mass Choir.
York College President Charles Kidd said he had planned to hold a Martin Luther King event at York when he was approached about the Queens 2000 initiative.
Kidd said he liked the idea so much he became the Queens 2000 Committee chairman and combined the York event with the Queens 2000 initiative.
