Despite just three available subs and some players without previous experience, the Queens College women's soccer team has gotten off to an impressive start, winning two of its first three games of the year.
“I think we are reaching our potential,” said Queens College head coach Roby Young. “Our goal is to give good games against teams equal to us like this team and to win against teams that are weaker than us. I'm very happy with the win today because the players played very well today.”
While they weren't the most skillful goals, Kalinina did put herself in good position to score her first collegiate goals.
“I guess it was just luck,” she said. “It was not technique, it was just being in the right place at the right time. It topped all of my presents today so far so I'm really happy.”
Kalinina, from Forest Hills, first found the back of the net in the middle of the first half off a cross from former Bayside standout Heather Lawson.
Another Lawson cross began the second scoring sequence. The freshman midfielder put the ball into the box where she found Giovanna Formato, who pulled St. Joe's sophomore keeper Kim Drielak off her line and centered to Kalinina in front. She tapped the ball into the open net to put the Lady Knights ahead, 2-0 in the 61st minute.
Keeper Mary Okloski notched her second shutout of the year. Queens also defeated New Jersey Tech 5-0 to open the season. Golden Eagles senior striker Ally Wolff almost spoiled the shutout, but her shot rang off the crossbar with 42 seconds left in the game.
“We have some girls who have never played soccer before, but I think an advantage we have is we are willing to hustle more than other teams are,” Formato said.
