Angry residents clashed with power authority officials last week at a public hearing in Long Island City. At stake, the construction of yet another power plant, just blocks from an elementary school.
City and state officials, as well as representatives from the New York Power Authority (NYPA), Coalition Helping Organize a Kleaner Environment (CHOKE) and local residents were on hand to tell their personal accounts of the pollution problem in northwest Queens.
NYPA, which currently operates three power plants in Astoria and Long Island City, is planning to install five more in the immediate area. Due to a bill put into law last year, the Department of Environmental Conservation can now allow plants to be placed anywhere in the state, without the approval of the community.
