Dancers at QMA explore women’s place in society

By The Times-Ledger

The performance complements the feminist issues explored in the museum's current exhibit, “Seductions and Games: Recent Video Installations by Maureen Connor,” on view through Jan. 28.

The Gonzalez troupe will present six dances, each touching on stereotypes of women. The opening piece, “Introduction,” features dancers in white, expressionless masks, exploring their identities to the sounds of Mexican instruments.

“M” explores the physical difficulties women face with high-heeled shoes, tight dresses, and other clothing.

“Aluminum Frame” depicts a self-absorbed woman in a skin-colored leotard as she explores her body and space inside an aluminum frame, accompanied by the music of Franz Schubert.

Ensemble director Annabella Gonzalez dances the lead in “Rosa,” a work with original compositions by Vittorio Furgeri. The piece depicts a woman reaching out to the audience to help her escape from the trap of having to wear silver shoes and pink garb.

Gonzales will invite the audience on stage to join the dancers in an improvisation using garish blond wigs as a comment on society's obsession with physical beauty.

The performance is free with museum admission, which is suggested at $5, $2.50 for students and seniors.
