Queens Trains Are Dirtiest And Cleanest In New York
The improved cleanliness was attributed by the report to the Transit Authoritys decision to expand its cleaning force. Since 1998, there has been a 17 percent increase of subway car cleaners (from 958 to 1,234) and a 39 percent increase of supervisors.
While not commenting on the report itself, Transit Authority spokesperson Melissa Farley said, "Our subways are cleaner than they have ever been."
Other key findings of the survey included:
For the second year in a row, the Q (18 percent) and the C (22 percent) lines were rated the systems dirtiest.
For the second year in a row, the M train performed best with a 76 percent clean car rating.
At least 2,000 subway cars were examined by the Straphanger inspectors during the four-month test period between October 2001 and January 2001.
