These may sound like excerpts from a survey course in philosophy, but in fact they are descriptions of pieces in an original dance composition by Mariana Beckerman of Flushing.
Beckerman, the 26-year-old artistic director of her own Flushing-based non-profit dance company, presents “Experience Unlocked Obsession” Sunday through Tuesday evenings, June 17-19 at The Present Company Theatorium at 198 Stanton St. on the Lower East Side.
Beckerman was smitten by the dancing muse when she was only 4 years old. “That's what usually happens in the arts,” she told Qguide. “It's something you feel you have to do, and you feel it at a very young age.”
Beckerman is a graduate of the LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, and of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Here's a synopsis of the upcoming performance:
“Untitled” – Beckerman describes this as “an orgasmic atmosphere, which is neither raunchy nor vulgar.” She says the works “plays with space and partnering.”
“Balance Beam” – “investigates dictatorship in a non-traditional way. Performers use tai-chi style movement across a diagonal line.”
“I'm G-d” – is a “close definition of spirituality” with the belief that “G-d is inside each of us” and that “we are each our own G-d.” Beckerman in her written description uses a hyphen to replace the “o” in God, the Jewish custom of avoiding fully spelling out the name in casual discourse.
“City Life” – “is composed of various issues that one encounters living in New York City. 'City Life' takes the audience into a world of crime, noise, egotism, traffic, over-population, drugs, parties, work, and New York City's cultural diversity.” It features original music by DJ/producer Mark Froloff.
