The Ridegwood-Glendale-Middle Village-Maspeth Little League Kings ventured into unfamiliar territory, playing a night game under lights at the excellent sports complex, Mitchell Field, in Nassau County.
In spite of the players’ concerns about seeing the ball, the unfamiliar surroundings and the unknown Manhasset Indians, the Kings put on a dominating performance, winning 10-0.
Ben Colon, in his first start for the Kings team, truly had a “royal” debut. Colon pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, two walks and only three hits. The only bump in Colon’s road came during the second inning when the Indian’s first two batters hit singles and he walked the next batter to load the bases with no outs. Colon helped himself out by striking out the next batter. Then, in what is fast becoming one of the Kings strengths, the defense stepped up and put out the fire.
Mario Canalini, playing second base, made a difficult catch of what would have been a bloop single to shallow right. Then Canalini put out the next batter with a second to first base play. All in all, Canalini made the most of his night, making six put outs out of six chances.
The entire King’s team contributed to the offensive side of the game, scoring 10 runs. AJ Foy started the Kings attack in the lead-off position. Foy hit a double and scored the game’s first run, being batted in by Danny Michitsch’s double. In the second inning, Jimmy Schuyler hit his own powerful double, scoring David Lewandowski and Canilini.
They saved the best for last when Jason Anjelovic hit a home run to deep left-center field, scoring two and bringing the game to a close by mercying the Indians in the sixth inning.
The Kings finally had their home opener at Victory Field last Saturday and kept their winning streak going at 5-0, defeating the HBQVB Dragons in both games of a double-header.
In the first game Chris Fuchs had a complete-game win, pitching seven innings, striking out eight, with no walks and allowing only three hits as the Kings won 7-3. Joe Kresse was the offensive star of the game, just missing hitting for the cycle by a double. Kresse drove home three RBIs, smacked a home run, single, and a triple.
In the second game,, pitched by Rich Callaghan, the rest of the Kings team followed Kresse’s lead and turned into true Dragonslayers, defeating HBQVB by the score of 25-2 in five innings. Callaghan pitched a dominating performance, striking out six, with no walks and three hits.
On the offensive side, Kresse continued his hitting performance and was joined by David Lewandowski, who went 5-for-5 in the lead-off position. Also joining the fun was Danny Tarrantino, who hammered a powerful line drive to left field to start the fourth inning.
