Ten youths from throughout Queens were chosen to be honored in the 2001 Hometown Heroes awards to recognize outstanding youths.
The fifth annual Hometown Heroes awards are sponsored by St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside, the TimesLedger Newspapers, the New York Mets and the Helms Bros. Mercedes-Benz car dealership in Bayside.
The heroes were slated to be honored July 18 from noon to 2 p.m. at an Awards Luncheon at Shea Stadium’s Diamond Club, where honorary chairwoman Donna Hanover and New York Mets Manager Bobby Valentine will host the event.
Libby Zimmer, president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Foundation for Children, said “these young people are wonderful examples of the best in today’s society. We will recognize each of them for their unique accomplishments and we invite the entire Queens community to join us July 18 as we honor them.”
The 2001 Hometown Heroes include:
• Most Valuable Player — Christopher Louis Benson, of Flushing, was chosen as the young person who has made a unique and significant contribution to the life of the community.
• Rookie of the Year — German Fernandez, of Rego Park, was picked as the person whose first efforts to help others have had positive and important outcomes.
• All Star Player — Michael Smyth, of Whitestone, was recognized as the young person who maintains good grades and is involved in community service.
• Home Run Hitter — Michael McGovern, of Floral Park, was selected as the person who volunteers with more than one community organization.
• Heart of the Team — Isaiah Roman, of Ridgewood, qualified as person who is always ready to work effectively with others for the good of all.
•Most Improved Player — Rameek Alston, of Springfield Gardens, took the spotlight as the person whose school work has improved dramatically in the past year.
• Amazin’ Kid — Annie Boman, of Bayside, was picked as the young person who uses the arts to bring joy to others.
• Major League Manager — Timothy Lee, of Maspeth, was recognized as the person who gains entrepreneurial achievement and demonstrates skill in business.
• Silver Slugger — Kristine Polios, of Whitestone, was honored as the young adult who has made a difference in their community since childhood.
• Comeback Kid — Antoinette Davi, of Maspeth, was selected as the person who has battled a major life obstacle or personal challenge.
