In a battle of two of the top teams so far in the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan, the Christ the King girls’ basketball team defeated the upstart Archbishop Molloy Stanners, 73-56, Saturday night at the Middle Village school.
Playing without two starters, Amanda LoCascio and Candice Lindsay, both of whom were hurt the night before in a non-league game, Christ the King came out sluggish but quickly bounced back en route to the team’s eighth win without a loss.
“We didn’t play a great first quarter,” said Christ the King coach Bob Mackey. “We were sloppy with the ball and missed some shots inside. They played a real good first quarter. They’re a good team.”
By the third quarter, Christ the King settled down and took complete control of the game, going up by more than 20 points before Molloy’s press reduced the margin to 17 by game’s end.
“We gave them a good game,” said Molloy head coach Marty Towey. “We were very happy with it.”
Roslyn Gold-Onwude led the Stanners with 16 points, followed by Jessica McEntee, who registered a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Molloy, now 10-2 on the season, was coming off a runner-up showing at the Future Stars Christmas Tournament in Westchester, Pa.
Senior guard Shay Doron led the Royals with 22 points, including 16 in the second half, while Tracy-Ann Holness finished with 17 points, 15 in the third quarter.
“I think it took us a little while to settle into things,” Mackey said. “We played well.”
Against The Breck School the day before, Christ the King had a slightly tougher time with things, holding on for a 60-51 win against the No. 1 ranked school in Minnesota.
LoCascio separated her shoulder running into a pick in the third quarter, while Lindsay strained her back diving for a loose ball, but the team still had enough firepower to hang on for the win and keep its record unblemished.
“That was a game that could have gone either way,” Mackey said. Breck had good size and good speed. It’s good experience for the kids.”
Doron led the way with 18 points, followed by nine from Leslie Dickinson.
After a date with Mary Louis Wednesday, CK will hit the road to face Bishop Loughlin Friday and again Sunday to take on St. Francis Prep.
Mary Louis 62, Bishop Ford 32. The Hilltoppers were led by Carol Kavanagh’s 10 points and teammate Teresa Mangone’s six steals. Mary Louis improves to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in league play.
