College Round-up: Mims scores 21 to lead Quinnipiac over LIU, 80-69

It didn’t take Kason Mims long to make an impact for the Quinnipiac men’s basketball team in a Northeast Conference showdown with Long Island University Monday night in Hamden, Conn.

The 6-foot-3 junior guard scored the Bobcats’ first 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting en route to a season-high 21 points in an 80-69 victory. The former Christ the King standout by way of Milford Academy also had 7 rebounds and 5 assists and outdueled another former Queens high school star in LIU senior guard Antawn Dobie.

Dobie, a 6-foot guard from Lefrak City who starred at McClancy, leads the Blackbirds in scoring (18.9 points per game) but the injury-riddled Dobie had a quiet 16 points and 4 assists in the loss.

Despite struggling at Quinnipiac, Dobie scorched Central Connecticut State Saturday for 31 points on 12-of-17 shooting and 5 assists in an 80-70 loss at the Schwartz Center in Brooklyn. He also had 5 assists and 3 steals in 40 minutes for LIU.

Another LeFrak City resident, Dawan Gary, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from Forest Hills High School, added 8 points and 10 rebounds for LIU at Quinnipiac.

Lohery named NYCAC  Rookie of the Week

Donna Lohery, a 5-foot-4 freshman point guard from Glendale, was named the NYCAC women’s basketball Rookie of the Week after leading Molloy College in scoring in a 1-1 week.

The former Mary Louis Academy star was red-hot against Queens College Saturday, as she scored a game-high 28 points, including 16-for-16 from the foul line, and added 3 assists and 3 steals in 40 minutes to lead Molloy to a 67-56 victory.

In a 94-65 loss to Philadelphia University, Lohery scored a team-high 18 points, including 9-of-11 from the foul line, and had 5 assists in 40 minutes for the Lady Lions.

Lohery, a TimesLedger First Team All-Queens player last year, leads Molloy in points per game (14.9), assists (82), free throw percentage (72.6 percent) and minutes per game (37.2).

Reimers earns CUNY honors

Ricardo Reimers, a 6-foot guard from Queens Village, was named CUNY men’s basketball Player of the Week after the junior out of Van Buren averaged 23.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1.7 assists for Hunter in a 1-1 conference week.

The former Kingsborough standout, who leads the Hawks in scoring (16.2 points per game) shot 58 percent from the field.

In an 80-70 win over John Jay, Reimers scored a season-high 32 points on 13-of-21 shooting

Queens mourns one of its own

A month after leading the Queens College water polo team to the NCAA Final Four where the Knights earned a third-place finish, senior Caner Erdogru suffered a fatal heart attack Jan. 12 at his parent’s house in Istanbul, Turkey. It was his 25th birthday.

Erdogru scored three goals, including the golden goal in overtime, to help Queens clinch a third-place finish at the Water Polo Championships. He led the Knights with 157 career assists, 372 quarters played, 105 ejections drawn and was second with 182 goals and 105 steals.

Women’s Basketball

St. John’s 69, Pittsburgh 66. Danielle Rainey scored a game-high 33 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, Shemika Stevens added 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, and Creasie Fowler grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds for St. John’s (8-12, 2-7 Big East), which outrebounded host Pittsburgh, 37-28 Saturday at the Petersen Events Center. Laine Selwyn scored 23 points for Pittsburgh (10-9, 2-6) and Amy Kunich added 19.

York 60, Brooklyn College 39. Garrianne Brown had 30 points and 7 steals for York (6-12, 5-5 CUNY) while Kelly Weismuller led Brooklyn (3-16, 2-7) with 26 points and 17 rebounds.

Syracuse 75, St. John’s 46. Led by Rochelle Coleman, who scored a game-high 27 points, including 7-for-13 from three-point range, Syracuse blew open a three-point game at halftime by outscoring the Red Storm, 45-19 in the second half Jan. 29 at Alumni Hall. Shannon Perry added 21 points and 6 boards, and April Jean had 8 points and 14 boards for the Orangewomen (8-11, 3-5). Stevens had 16 points, 4 assists and 3 steals for the Red Storm.

Men’s Basketball

Brooklyn College 86, York 84. Aaron Goldstein had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists, including the game-winning bucket with four seconds left in double overtime for Brooklyn (4-14, 3-6). York falls to 8-12, 6-4.
