MANHATTAN — A Long Island City man and a Jamaica woman — both employees of the New York City Housing Authority — were arrested on charges of trying to cash counterfeit checks worth $4,800, officials said.
Amos Leslie, 40, a community services aide at the Ravenswood Houses in Long Island City, and Marlene Webb, 37, a community assistant at the Latimer Gardens Houses in Flushing, were charged with trying to deposit fake checks from a theater company and a financial securities firm into their bank accounts, said Rose Gill Hearn, commissioner of the city Department of Investigation.
Both Leslie and Webb have accounts at the Municipal Credit Union, which alerted the authorities, Gill Hearn said.
If convicted both face a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, Gill Hearn said.
Man struck by car at 169th and Hillside
JAMAICA — A man crossing Hillside Avenue in Jamaica was in critical condition Tuesday night after he was struck by a car, police said.
The 33-year-old man, who was not identified, was walking north across the intersection at Hillside Avenue and 169th Street when he was hit by a Lincoln Town Car traveling east on Hillside Avenue about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.
The pedestrian was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital in critical condition. No summonses were issued or arrests made. The investigation was continuing.
Robber gets $1,000 from Fleet bank in Rosedale
ROSEDALE — A man in his 30s robbed a Rosedale bank last week, taking $1,000 in the heist, police said.
The man entered the Fleet Savings Bank at 241-42 South Conduit Ave. in Rosedale about 1:10 p.m. March 12, police said. He handed the teller a note demanding money and fled with the cash, police said.
No arrests were made and the investigation was continuing, police said.
Off-duty firefighters arrested after alcohol-related accident
BELLE HARBOR — Two off-duty city firefighters were arrested after their car crashed on a Belle Harbor street early Friday morning, police said.
Gregory Tracy was charged with driving while intoxicated, while his passenger, Larry Prather, was charged with obstructing governmental administration, police said. Both men were assigned to Engine Co. 248.
The men were arrested after their car was involved in an accident at the intersection of Beach 138th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard at 1:30 a.m. Friday, police said. No injuries were reported.
Two shot in melee on Jamaica street
JAMAICA — A 25-year-old man walking by a group of men arguing was shot in the back in front of 113-17 Sutphin Blvd. March 11, police said. The victim was removed to Mary Immaculate Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
A short time later, a 27-year-old man walked into the hospital and said he was shot in the arm at the same location, cops said.
Authorities said they have not recovered any weapons or made any arrests in the ongoing investigation.
S. Jamaica man found dead with gunshot wound to chest
SOUTH JAMAICA — A 21-year-old man was found shot dead in his South Jamaica home last Thursday, police said.
The man, who was not identified, was found by his father with one gunshot wound to his chest at their home at 120-11 140th St. just before 8 a.m. last Thursday, police said.
No arrests were made and the investigation was continuing, police said.
Former Whitestone man sentenced for child porn
KEW GARDENS — A former Whitestone resident was sentenced to up to four years in prison for possessing child pornography, Queens District Richard Brown announced.
Warren Young, 33, of Lower Manhattan was sentenced on Monday in State Supreme Court in Kew Gardens.
He had pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography on Feb. 7.
Young’s images, which he stored in his computer in Whitestone, depicted girls as young as three having sex with men, the district attorney said.
Statue, headstones damaged at Maspeth cemetery
MASPETH — One statue and four headstones were damaged by unknown suspects at the Third Calvary Cemetery in Maspeth Monday afternoon, police said.
The vandalism took place at the cemetery, at Laurel Hill Boulevard and 48th Street, between 1 ap.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday, but it was not reported until Tuesday, police said.
No arrests were made and the investigation was continuing, police said.
Man gets cash in holdup of LIC bank branch
LONG ISLAND CITY — A man held up a Long Island City bank Monday, making off with an unknown amount of money, police said.
The man, who has not been identified, entered the Columbia Federal Bank at 42-02 Northern Blvd. just before 2:30 p.m. Monday, police said.
He handed the teller a note demanding money, and fled with an undetermined amount of cash.
No injuries were reported, and no arrests were made, police said. The investigation was continuing.
Astoria cop suspended after failing drug test
ASTORIA — A police officer assigned to the 114th Precinct was suspended from duty Friday for failing a drug test, police said.
Officer Roy Benson, who worked out of the station house at 34-16 Astoria Blvd., was relieved from duty at 11:15 p.m. Friday, police said.
