Knights swept by New Haven to fall below .500 in NYCAC

The Queens College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheaders Saturday against the University of New Haven, falling below the .500 mark in NYCAC conference play in the process.

The Knights (8-11, 7-9) lost the opener, 9-5, after coming back from a 3-0 deficit with a five-run fourth inning, Rightfielder Robert Berhman and designated hitter Michael Regina both had two RBIs in the game, while first baseman Vincent Garelick had one.

But Knights starter Keith Haack, who gave up a run in the first and two in the third, was touched for four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two more run in the seventh off Queens reliever Patrick Hogarty closed the book on the scoring.

Chris DiRoma picked up the win for New Haven (19-5, 10-3).

In the nightcap, Queens pitching again took a shelling, as starter Louis Welsh gave up four runs and relievers Edmund Agosto and Nicholas Treppiedi combined to surrendered 11 runs in a 16-2 defeat.

Third baseman Richard Rivera had three hits, including his third round-tripper of the season for Queens. Second baseman Victor Pantopoulos was 2-for-4 with and RBI.

Earlier in the week, the Knights split a doubleheader against the University of Bridgeport, losing the first game 15-9, but battling back in the second to win 13-4.

Shortstop John Aluska was 4-for-5 with three RBIs in the game, Pantopoulos was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and Rivera was 3-for-4 with one RBI. but despite pounding out 16 hits and bringing home nine runs, Queens could not contain the Bridgeport offense, which scored nine runs in the final two inning to seal the win.

In the second game, starter Mike Morris gave up five hits and four runs — only two earned — through seven innings, which was more than enough, as Queens again rocked the Bridgeport staff, amassing 19 hits and 13 runs.

Catcher Carlos Cruz led the charge with four hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Pantopoulos also had four hits and one RBI, Rivera had three hits and two RBIs, Vincent Garelick added two hits and two RBIs and Regina and Berhman added two hits apiece.

Michael Ziegler pitched two innings of scoreless relief to close the door on the win.
