Strut Your Stuff Summertime Fun classes begin June 30. Five-week programs will be offered for all ages, including ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, fitness, cardio/tone. There also is the new musical theater and funk tap, as well as the anyone + Me program, for ages 12 to 30 months. There will be combination dance for ages 2 1/2 to 6 years and gym stuff for ages 3 to 5 years

Congratulations to Betty Letterese, director of community affairs of New York Hospital Queens, who was selected as the 2003 New York State Woman of Distinction. She was selected by state Sen. Frank Padavan (R-Bellerose) because of her outstanding commitment to health-care issues at New York Hospital Queens and because of her continued commitment to community service.

The following programs also are at the Poppenhusen Institute: Saturday, June 21, will be the 140th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg concert, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The Americana Brass Band Sextet will perform Civil War music. From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a lecture by Professor Gordon Shay. Tickets for the concert and lecture are $3 and must be obtained in advance. Local author Jim Haas will also give a presentation on College Point and the Civil War.
Saturday, June 28, at 2 p.m. will be a free event – a history of the New York City Police Department from the colonial period forward, with speaker James L. Coll.
Saturday, July 12, at 2 p.m. will be a free lecture on the Old Port of New York City, regarding much of the existing shoreline of “man-made” land. The lecture will focus on excavation that unearthed hidden structures and artifacts representing 300 years of history. Lectures are part of the New York Council for the Humanities speakers in the humanities program. Call 718-358-0067 for more information.
Registration for St. Fidelis School will be held if you wish to register your child for admission into St. Fidelis nursery, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs as well as other grades in the school where seats are available (small class sizes). Go to the school office between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
In addition to the part-time pre-kindergarten class, they offer a full-day pre-k class from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an option to stay in their after-school program for an additional fee. Bring child’s immunization record, birth certificate, baptismal certificate and $75 registration fee. Children registering for nursery must be 3 years old by Dec. 31; 4 years old by Dec. 31 for pre-k; and 5 years old by Dec. 31 for kindergarten.
The Whitestone Community Volunteer Ambulance Service is having its annual blood bank drive on Saturday, June 21, at its headquarters at 12-15 150th St. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please come and support this worthy cause during the scheduled hours.
