The Dime Savings Bank Orioles upset Joe’s Pizzeria Yankees Saturday morning with a convincing 19-4 victory. The Orioles have now won three games in a row after starting the season 0-5.
The Orioles were led by Sam Hoffman’s second straight victory. He has only yielded five runs in his last 12 innings pitched and helped his own cause by going 4-for-4 with a monster three-run home run in the Orioles’ 11-run third inning.
Manager Bob Kruczowy said this was a true team effort, as the Orioles players all had at least one hit against a terrific Yankee pitching staff. Matt Kruczowy finished up where Hoffman left off, yielding one run and striking out four in two innings of relief.
Eric Walpole and Christian Graddick played stellar defense at first and third bases, while Adam Spitz and Matt Komal Anaud kept the infield and outfield tight. Nickolass Pappas is becoming the pride of the Oriole outfield as he continues to show great hustle and determination on the field and at bat.
Mike Cohen is becoming the Orioles’ most improved player as his knowledge of the game impresses his fellow teammates and coaches. Joey Shaffer has locked up the starting catching position and continues to improve every game.
Andrew Golzman has led the Orioles with an eight-game hitting streak as he tripled to deep right field. Andrew’s power is awesome. Coach Ray Lopez said after the game that when Andrew hits one you better watch out.
Mark Anthony Scolaro, the Glen Oaks Ringer from Bayside, has also pounded the ball and was given the game ball as he went 2-2 with three walks and three runs scored. Kevin Toohill said after the game that the Yankees had the best coaches in Glen Oaks history.
The Yankees stars were Kevin McCarthy, Patrick Kelleher, Bobby McDowell and Kevin Han, who all played well in a losing effort.
Girls’ softball
The Girls A softball division saw Pizza Chef edge Jam Services in a well-played contest with Britany Naposki, Madison Kelley, Madeline Moravek and Jenna Palazzolo providing the offensive firepower, while Monica Sharma, Christina Guerra, Aisling O’Sullivan and Katie McGrory provided the defense against a tough Jam Services squad.
Led by Victoria Doumazios, Sarah O’Leary and Alexis Chirieleison, SMC Electrical Contracting gave Pizza Chef all it could handle as Christina Ferrara, Madison Kelley, Christina Guerra and Monica Sharma had great two-way efforts to help Pizza Chef prevail.
Pizza Chef continued its strong performance against D&R General Contracting when Katie McGrory, Jenna Palazzolo and Katie Werthmuller each went 5-for-5 and Aisling O’Sullivan and Brittany Naposki shined on defense.
The yellow and white of D&R play their best game of the year so far and was lead by Ashley Schwenk who played yet another great game a third base.
Danielle Kline played a great game at second base and went 3-for-3 at the plate. Chole Fallon played a solid game at both ends.
The game between D&R General Contracting and Jam Services saw each team go ahead after every at-bat, but at the end D&R Contracting came up a little short. Led by Evelisse Coiella, Kristen Freile, Emily Reilly and Lydia Sarro, the D&R girls had some great hits and made some good plays on the field.
Baseball
Mini Minor Division
Champion Construction and Parsons and 20th Ave. Auto played a hard-fought game that went back and fought. The play of Daniel Pagano on the field and his 3-for-4 at the plate was key, as were the two hits by yet another Pagano as Robbie Pagano played a good game. Timmy Regan added two hits with runners on. Joseph Favalora added a bases-loaded double to score two runs, and Dylan McCutchen, who started out slow at the plate, added two hits and drove in a run.
Champion Construction came up short against Ranshaw Fuel Oil. Richie PeBorde made a great play at second base and saved at least a couple of runs with his heads-up play in the field. Dylan Walker was hot at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring a run.
Also key was the play of the Casabianca boys on the field and at the plate, with Jon Carlo going 2-for-3 with a bases-empty triple and Sal adding a key hit to keep the inning alive. Zackary Stagno had a 2-for-3 day at the plate as the lead-off hitter as well as his play on the field. And yet again Megan Finnerty played a great game on the field.
Roller hockey
Coffee Lovers 9, Lamboy Chiropractic 1.
Minor Hockey Saturday saw Lamboy Chiropractic lose to Coffee Lovers, 9-1. Lamboy Chiropractic’s only goal was scored by Dean Rodriquez. Maggi Todaro played a great game at defense; this was her first complete game at that position.
Joseph Favalora played yet another strong game. Samantha Favalora is getting better and better with each game played, and Dylan Rodriquez made some good plays and great passes in the loss.
Lamboy Chiropractic 7, Mass Electric 3.
Mass Electric and Lamboy Chiropractic played each other on May 23 in a DG Hockey Minors contest. Mass Electric came out working hard on a hot day, and Jet Lem made it worth it with a goal at 16:37 assisted by Jared Labades for a score of 1-0.
Lamboy Chiropractic kept the puck pressure on in the Mass Electric zone, and Dean Rodriguez put it into the back of the net unassisted. At the 13-minute mark, Dean Rodriguez made good on another chance to give Lamboy Chiropractic a 2-1 lead.
Mass Electric clamped down and held Lamboy scoreless until one minute left in the first period, as Gazio, assisted by Dean Rodriguez, made the score 3-1, Lamboy. Mass Electric made a goalie change to start the second period, with George Brockmann going in between the pipes.
This was the first time he played this position. Mass Electric got some good skating that resulted in Jet Lem’s getting his second on the day at 14:41 to make it 3-2, Lamboy. Dean Rodriguez came right back and notched his third of the afternoon at 13:36 of the second to give the Lamboy Chiropractic team a 4-2 lead.
Mass Electric kept working the puck, but at 9:10 of the second Dean Rodriguez hit his fourth of the day, unassisted for a 5-2 advantage. Mass Electric kept forcing the puck into the Lamboy Chiropractic zone with nothing getting past D. Pastiglione.
George Brockmann received good support from his teammates even though S. Favalora of Lamboy slid one in at 7:25 of the second period, followed by J. Favalora, who was assisted by M. Todoro, popping in a rebound to give Lamboy a 7-2 lead at the end of the second. In the third period Mass Electric gave a great effort, with George Brockmann making a couple of saves and his teammates backing him up and keeping the puck in the Lamboy Chiropractic zone until Jimmy Huyhn got the rubber through to make the final 7-3, Lamboy Chiropractic.
Coffee Lovers 5, Mass Electric 1.
On May 21 Mass Electric and Coffee Lovers met in a DG Minors hockey match at Harvey Park. Coffee Lovers put a one-up on the scoreboard first with a goal by Ryan Martino at 12:32 of the first period.
The Mass Electric players worked at some good opportunities, but Coffee Lovers held them in check. Likewise, Mass Electric stopped Coffee Lovers’ chances, but at 3:15 of the first period J. Martino got one past, assisted by Ryan Martino, to make the score 2-0 at the end of one period.
Coffee Lovers slid the puck into the net at 16:58 of the second period to give them a 3-0 advantage as C. Lenis, assisted by R. Martino, combined for this goal. Mass Electric turned up the defense until 8:10 of the second period, when C. Lenis knocked home his second of the day, unassisted, to give his team a 4-0 lead at the end of the second period.
The teams played a tight defensive game in the third period with good goaltending from Mass Electric’s Emily Becker and Coffee Lovers’ T. Bellomo. Mass Electric kept up the pressure and it paid off with an unassisted goal by Jimmy Huyne at 7:55 of the third period. Mass Electric kept on giving its best to get back in the game, but J. Tomlinson popped one in to make the final 5-1, Coffee Lovers.
