What a difference a week makes! The Bayside 11-year-old baseball travel team returned from a wonderful trip to Chicago over the Fourth of July holiday, but the Midwest hospitality was unkind in handing the Red Devils a few tough defeats.
Back on their home turf, they used that eye-opening experience to win the District 26 Regional Championship by defeating College Point 9-3 at Crocheron Park.
John Paul Koulotouros led the way with a complete game, six-inning victory. Hitting stars included Dominic Formato (two singles), shortstop Frankie Biordi (double, single) and catcher Anthony Scianna (two hits, RBI).
In their semifinal win in College Point (a 10-0 win last Thursday), Bayside got another complete game from pitcher Joey Pravata who allowed just one hit.
Tom Karcinski started the offensive attack with a fence-clearing two-run home run to right field and Nick Palermo, Frankie Mongelli, Ryan Paccione, Brandon Sheiner all contributed RBIs in the victory.
Jordan Colflesh (second base), Anthony Witschel (third base), Ryan Magee (right field) and John Aponte (left field) all pitched in defensively for the District 26 champions who won the first ever 11-year-old regional crown.
The team coached by Mike Karcinski, Dominic Scianna and Ben Biordi will resume regional action in August when they battle teams from neighboring districts in Westchester County, Brooklyn and Long Island.
All the coaches, parents, team members and Bayside Little League Commissioner Bob Reid would like to thank those involved in helping raise money for the Chicago trip.
The players took in a game at famed Wrigley Field and saw Sammy Sosa hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning for a Cubs win, toured the Windy City, traveled by plane for the first time and ventured out of state for a baseball trip they won’t soon forget.
