Twenty-two couples who had been married at least 50 years gathered at Services Now for Adult Persons in Queens Village Friday to celebrate their achievements and receive a few special gifts from both Weprin and SNAP during this love-struck time of year.Weprin said he hoped his marriage, a mere 10 years in comparison, would someday reach the milestone achieved by the couples. He admitted it was a long unfamiliar road ahead, but quipped that longtime Republican state Sen. “Frank Padavan will probably still be in office.”The longest marriage in the celebration was that of Mary and Joseph D'Antoni of Bellerose who were married in September 1941 and have spent 64 years together. The couple credited good health and understanding as a key to their union that produced four children, 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.Joseph said he married his longtime girlfriend shortly before joining the service and shipping off to fight in World War II.”You have to know your wife, understanding is the key,” he said.On the other side of the spectrum were Marie and Ben Serra of Hollis, married since 1943, who said being completely different is what has kept them together over the years.”We disagree on everything,” said Ben Serra. “You could say that opposites attract.” He then planted a kiss on his honey, to which she replied “That should take care of him for the year.”Each couple was introduced to the seniors who had gathered at the center and were presented with two gifts, a sun catcher from Weprin and a small heart shaped box from SNAP.SNAP is a senior center that provides meals and services for the elderly while allowing them to gather in a social environment.
