Senator Serphin R. Maltese and Senator Malcolm Smith hosted the 11th New York State Veterans Awards Presentation Ceremony for Queens-area Veterans who were presented with the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, the New York State Conspicuous Service Star, the New York State Medal for Merit or the New York State Certificate for Valor.
“I believe it is important to honor our nation's veterans for the courageous sacrifices and valiant contributions they made to our country,” said Senator Maltese, a Korean War Veteran and former Chairman of the Senate Veterans Committee. “I am happy to have the privilege of assisting in obtaining and presenting these awards to these deserving men and women. They have all distinguished themselves and this is a fitting tribute to their dedication, patriotism and bravery.”
“I will be forever grateful to Senator Maltese for giving me the opportunity to partner with him in honoring veterans, and I will never forget what our veterans have done for our country,” said Senator Smith. “It is my commitment to do something every day on behalf of our veterans.”
Over 200 people were present for the ceremony at the St. Albans VA Campus Auditorium, including Supreme Court Justices Joseph Golia and James Golia.
The invocation was given by Reverend Philip T. Sica and the Master of Ceremonies was Queens Board of Election Commissioner Anthony Como.
