Flushing rolls over HS of Teaching

By Mitch Abramson

Repudiating the past is also nothing new to Jaime Selip, the coach of Queens High School of Teaching. The Tigers have emerged as one of the top teams in Queens III-B in only their second year on the varsity level, spitting on the notion that a team needs time to create a culture of winning. The school opened just three years ago.Two teams with big ambitions and contrasting histories met Friday to decide first place in Queens III-B. Flushing ran away with a 60-42 win at Queens High School of Teaching, but the Tigers showed enough potential to hint at a rosy future. Flushing improved to 13-0, 9-0 in its division and is clearly the best 'B' team in Queens. It was suggested to Nasso that the Red Devils might have what it takes to go deep in the playoffs, having already beaten both borough powerhouses Richmond Hill and Van Buren. She shrugged her shoulders and changed the topic, hoping not to disturb destiny's course. The Red Devils were led by senior Jazmin Bradley's 16 points, four assists and four steals and senior Andrea Buckham's 15 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists, including eight straight points in the second half.”We have short term goals,” said Nasso in her 21st season as Flushing's coach. “I don't want to get into long term goals yet.”Selip would glimpse into the future if she could. With a record of 10-1, 9-1 in the division, she has the best record of any team at the school, better than fencing (2-8), girls' golf (2-4), girls' volleyball (0-10), boys' basketball (4-6) and boys' soccer (0-10), which Selip coached through practices in school hallways and home games at opposing schools. The Tigers are the cream of the school, and the players are reminded of their status every day.”They call us the 'superstars,'” said junior Kristina Galea, who scored 23 points. “A lot of people come out to support us. Our games always have big crowds. It feels good, but we don't let it go to our heads. We wanted to win this game badly. We'll get them next time.”Reach reporter Mitch Abramson by e-mail at TimesLedger@aol.com or call 718-229-0300 Ext. 130.
