CK Girls Have Tough Week Ahead
Christ the King hasn’t lost a game in quite a while. In fact, they haven’t experienced the agony of defeat since March of 2004, when they lost the Class AA Federation title game to Murry Bergtraum.
This week, the Royals, ranked No. 1 in USA Today’s national poll, will be tested, first with a road game against Springfield Central (MA), perhaps that state’s best team.
But the real challenge comes Sunday, in the first-ever regular season meeting with the No. 3 Blazers, whom they defeated for the state championship last year, at Madison Square Garden in the Nike Super 6 Invitational.
The two teams were scheduled to face each other a few years ago at St. John’s University, but the game was cancelled for unspecified reasons.
“I thought the opportunity to play at the Garden was a great thing for the kids,” Christ the King Coach Bob Mackey said. “I really wanted to get them to play there.”
Christ the King won their 37th straight game Sunday, routing Mary Louis, 66-41, at home Sunday afternoon. Lorin Dixon led five Royals in double figures with 13 points. Kelly Barrett added 12.

Molloy rebounded nicely from a Friday night setback to Mary Louis, beating Mount Vernon, 61-42, Sunday at Marist College in Poughkeepsie. Angelina Waterman led the Stanners (8-2, 2-1 CHSAA) with 13 points. Janine Maser added 10 points and the game’s MVP, Kerri White, had nine points and seven assists.

It was a rough weekend for our borough’s public school powers in the PSAL’s Girls Basketball Invitational Classic. Francis Lewis (9-2, 6-0 Queens A) fell to St. Michael Academy, 66-53, Saturday at York College. Seniors Vionca Murray (26 points) and Diatiema Hill combined for 40 points but the rest of the Patriots scored just 13.
Cardozo (7-4, 6-1 Queens A), meanwhile, was nipped by Paterson East Side (NJ) 56-54 in overtime. Lekesha Harris led the Judges with 20 points and Marissa Flagg had 13.
