Last year, after all-city point guard Rosalyn Gold-Onwude went down with a knee injury, Molloy basketball Coach Marty Towey had nowhere to turn. Opponents relentlessly pressed the Stanners. With no ball handlers, Molloy struggled. This year, they have a solution to that problem.
Against Bishop Ford, the two new point guards - sophomore Kerri White and junior Christine Harnischfeger - once again proved the importance of that position, combining for 20 points and 10 assists as Molloy routed the Falcons, 64-49, last Wednesday evening.
“They both can penetrate and shoot the 3-[pointer],” said Towey. “They’re a nice weapon to have.”
Against Ford, the duo proved to be lethal. Although Harnischfeger comes off the bench, Towey has increasingly used the two together recently, leading to three consecutive league wins. They engineered a 21-5 run over the final six minutes of the second quarter, providing the Stanners with a 19-point halftime lead.
Harnischfeger scored seven of her nine points in the spurt while White set up teammates four times for easy baskets. Junior center Angie Waterman led Molloy (11-2, 5-1 CHSAA I) with 17 points and nine rebounds, Janine Maser added 16 and White had 11 points and eight assists.
This season, teams have rarely pressed the Stanners (11-2, 5-1 CHSAA I). And when they have? “Not for long,” said Harnischfeger, “because we’ve broken it.”
Because Harnischfeger and White, who’ve played A.A.U. ball together for several years with the NYC Heat, were part of a jayvee team that went undefeated, winning the city championship, Towey decided against bringing either one up to the varsity.
“It would’ve been forcing the action,” he said. “I didn’t want to bring the kids up too fast.” Based on their latest exploits, he made the right decision.
