When basketball season begins, public school teams across the borough talk excitedly of reaching Madison Square Garden, the site of boys and girls city championships.
On February 3, student-athletes from Cardozo and Campus Magnet will compete not for basketball championships - but for track and field medals.
Cardozo’s 4 x 400 team of Cody Newman, Dalilah Muhammad, Lindsay Rowe and Joy Henry will be at the 99th Millrose Games at The Garden along with Campus Magnet sprinter Dameion Willis, who qualified to compete in the Fastest High School Boy in New York City 60-meter dash.
The event offers contestants a chance to participate at Madison Square Garden in front of college scouts and coaches, and to see professionals like American Joanna Hayes, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in the 60 meters. And past champions like Gail Devers, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, who became the first athlete in history to win the USA indoor championship in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.
“It’s a great accomplishment,” Cardozo Coach Gail Emmanuel said. “It’s a very prestigious event, and it allows for more exposure and recognition.”
