Tyrell Coon was looking for a prominent football program along with a solid academic institution. He got both when he gave his verbal commitment to Div. I-AA Lafayette College (Easton, PA), the two-time Patriot League champions.
Coon, a three-year starter at Holy Cross at running back and linebacker, was recruited by the Leopards as a halfback. Although he will back up the starting senior tailback Jonathan Hurt, Coon was told to expect spot duty as a freshman, and would then become the featured back in Coach Frank Tavani’s run-oriented system as his career progresses.
“The coach told me if I work hard enough, I’ll be getting 35, 40 carries a game,” he said. “I’ll get a chance to
really show what I can do.”
A standout for the Knights on their 2004 CHSFL ‘AA’ city championship team and this year’s semifinal team, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Coon ran for 260 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 8.7 yards-a-carry this year.
Coon was also recruited by Georgetown, his second choice, Hofstra, Wagner, Stony Brook, Marist and Sacred Heart. Coon visited both Lafayette and Georgetown recently, and then made his decision.
“I just picked Lafayette because of the facilities, the academics, the football - all of it,” he said.
A student with a 90 average who ranks 47th in his class of 230, Coon said the academic quality of his selection was just as important as the strength of the football program. Coon, an avid writer, plans on studying journalism at Lafayette.
