Assemblywoman Margaret Markey is proud to announce the availability of the SUNY Maritime Scholarship to graduating seniors who reside within the 30th Assembly District.
Under the Cadet Appointment Program recently approved by the State Legislature, every member of the Assembly and Senate have the ability to nominate an eligible student within their district to receive a four-year scholarship to attend the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College.
The 30th Assembly District, which covers Maspeth, Woodside and parts of Astoria, Middle Village, and Elmhurst has a large pool of students who meet the qualifications of a 1200 combined SAT score (math & critical reading) and a high school GPA of at least 90 percent.
The student must also have demonstrated leadership and community service experience and be a resident of the 30th Assembly District to receive the Maritime Scholarship.
“I look forward to interviewing any and all qualified candidates who are competing for entry into SUNY Maritime,” Assemblywoman Markey said. “The opportunities that this program offers are unparalleled by anything in most any other college setting.”
Accepted cadets into SUNY Maritime receive a four-year scholarship equivalent to the cost of enrollment at any SUNY college or university and have the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate degree in engineering, business or science.
SUNY Maritime also offers the unique experience of spending three summers sailing aboard the world’s most advanced training vesse.
“This unique education blends both classroom instruction with hands-on experience to create one of the most exciting college opportunities, and I encourage all who are eligible and interested in applying for this scholarship,” Markey said.
Students who wish to apply to SUNY Maritime can obtain applications through Markey’s office at 718 651-3185 or contact the Maritime College Office of Admissions directly at 718 409-7221.
Anyone interested must submit his or her applications no later than March 15, 2006.
