Jamaica home makeover to air

This Sunday, May 7, the episode in which the Peter family home in Jamaica, Queens is remodeled will be aired at 8 p.m. on ABC. ABC Extreme Makeover and Alure Home Improvement tore down the house — two blocks north of Jamaica Avenue — last month, and built a brand-new, decked-out home in just five days. Although the exterior of the house has been shown in The Queens Courier and other publications, the airing will be the first time the public will get a glimpse of the interior – designed by Ty Pennington, Michael Moloney, and Tanya McQueen.
Before Extreme Home Makeover, the Peter family lived without heat and hot water. Their home, on 115th Street in Jamaica, was ravaged by fire in December 2004. For all nine people in the house, there was only one “working” bathroom, and everyone slept on mattresses laid out on the ground.
The Peter family emigrated from Guyana in 1996 and sent for their three children in 2000. The same year, the parents gave birth to their daughter Ashley, who has very bad asthma. The Peters also took in their niece and nephew, so that the kids could get a good education in Queens schools, as well as a local boy, now 18 years old.
