UFT awards $1M in scholarships

Leann Stanick, a graduating senior at John Adams High School in Ozone Park, now dreams of becoming a corporate lawyer, and with the help of a $5,000 scholarship from the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), she will take the first step toward her dream - attending college. The combination of Stanick's academic merit, financial need, and personal history led the UFT scholarship committee to select her as one of 41 Queens students to receive the award from the 37th Annual Albert Shanker College Scholarship Fund.
Of the 179 NYC students who won a total $1 million in scholarships from the UFT, Queens students - many of whom are new immigrants - received $205,000.
Stanick, along with her family, joined winners including Aaron Bell of Springfield Gardens High School, Mimi Yang of Forest Hills High School, Aye Kyaw of Newcomers High School, and Emily Hernandez of the Arts and Business High School for an awards banquet on Tuesday, June 6.
